The first ever reference of the city of Ioannina was dated in the 9th century, however other views suggest that the city was founded by the Emperor Justinian. Ioannina was a very important city for the Despotate of Epirus in the 13th century. It was the centre of economical flourishing, which continued for the following centuries. In 1430, Ioannina was surrendered to the Turks, following an agreement. At the end of the 18th century until the beginning of the 20th century, the city was the centre of Ali Pasha’a dominion. During the period of Ali Pasha’s rule, the area experienced great economic and intellectual growth. The monuments of the city that especially charms its visitors, serve as witnesses of its history: the Castle, the Monasteries of the Islet with their fine frescoes, the Mosques, the Synagogue, the old mansions etc.
